The Success Story...

Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi – A Legacy of Vision, Excellence, and Innovation

The Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases at Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi stands as a testament to decades of visionary leadership, academic rigor, and unwavering commitment to advancing gastroenterology and hepatology services in Pakistan.

The journey began in 1985, when two pioneering clinicians—Prof. M. Umer and Prof. Bushra Khaar—completed their FCPS in General Medicine and aspired to pursue specialized training in gastroenterology and hepatology. At that time, no dedicated specialty services existed in the Rawalpindi region. Undeterred, they embarked on a global learning mission, visiting renowned institutions such as:

  • Cornell University Hospital, New York, USA
  • First Tianjin Hospital, China
  • King’s College University Hospital, UK
  • Northwest University Hospital, Chicago, USA …and several other centers of excellence.

Their tireless efforts culminated in the formal establishment of the Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases in 2012, marking a transformative milestone in the region’s healthcare landscape.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Spanning a covered area of 10,000 square feet, the center is housed within the new building of Holy Family Hospital and comprises two fully functional sections:

  • Old Section (First Floor): Operates 24/7, providing essential diagnostic and therapeutic services such as upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy.
  • New Section (Ground Floor): Dedicated to advanced procedures, including:
    • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
    • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
    • High-Resolution Manometry
    • Phototherapy for GI and hepatic conditions

The center also features a dedicated inpatient ward with 32 beds, exclusively serving gastroenterology and hepatology patients. This ensures continuity of care, procedural safety, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Academic Excellence and Postgraduate Training

As a recognized teaching and training institution, the center proudly offers postgraduate training programs in MD and FCPS Gastroenterology, under the auspices of Rawalpindi Medical University. To date, more than 20 consultants have completed their training at the center and are now serving in leading hospitals and academic institutions across Pakistan—contributing to the national healthcare system and elevating standards of GI care.
